Privacy policy

The short version: Nippy has no account, no servers of its own, no ads and no analytics. Your location goes to Apple Weather so it can send you a forecast. Your birthday, star signs and settings stay on your phone.
Who we are
Nippy is an iPhone app made by Chris Price (“we”, “us”). This policy covers the Nippy app and this website, nippyweather.com. Questions go to support@chrislprice.com.
What we collect
Nothing. We don’t run servers for Nippy, so there is nowhere for your data to go. We can’t see who uses the app, where they are or what they do in it. The sections below explain what the app uses on your device, and the few cases where your device talks to Apple on your behalf.
Location
If you allow it, Nippy asks iOS for your approximate location while the app is open. It never asks for background location. It uses it to:
- request your forecast from Apple Weather (WeatherKit), which receives the coordinates; and
- show your town’s name, using Apple’s geocoding service.
You don’t have to share your location. Choose “Pick a city instead” and search for a place; the search text goes to Apple’s geocoding service to find it. Your chosen city is saved only on your device.
Those requests are handled by Apple under Apple’s privacy policy. We never receive your location. In the App Store’s terms, coarse location is used for app functionality, isn’t linked to your identity and isn’t used for tracking.
Your birthday and star signs
When you set up Nippy, it asks for your date of birth and, if you like, your birth time. This is used for two things:
- checking that you’re 18 or over. If you’re under 18 or choose “Rather not say”, Safe Word mode is locked on; and
- working out your Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars signs for your daily reading.
Both happen entirely on your iPhone. Your birthday is stored on the device and is never uploaded anywhere.
What’s stored on your device
Nippy keeps the following in its own storage on your iPhone so it can remember you between launches:
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Settings: edition, skin, appearance, units, narrator, haptics, sound, shake-to-Safe-Word | So the app looks and behaves the way you left it |
| Your birthday and optional birth time | Age check and star signs |
| Your chosen city, if you picked one | To fetch its weather |
| Your most recent forecast | To show something useful when you’re offline |
| Progress: achievements, game high score, the dates you opened the app and a few counters | Achievements and skin unlocks |
Nippy’s widgets read a small summary (place name, upcoming temperatures and conditions, the day’s one-liner, moon phase and your Sun sign’s headline) from a shared container that only Nippy and its widgets can access, on the same device.
This data follows the normal iOS rules for app data. For example, it may be included in your iPhone or iCloud backups. Deleting Nippy deletes it.
Motion, haptics and sound
- Shake for Safe Word. While Nippy is open and this setting is on, the app reads the accelerometer to detect a firm shake. The readings are processed instantly and never stored. Turn it off in Settings.
- Haptics are vibrations your phone plays. They don’t collect anything.
- Voices are recordings bundled inside the app. A few lines, such as horoscope readings, are spoken by iOS’s built-in speech on your device. Nippy never uses your microphone.
No analytics, ads or tracking
Nippy contains no analytics, advertising, crash-reporting or tracking SDKs, and doesn’t use Apple’s advertising identifier. It doesn’t track you across apps or websites.
If you’ve chosen to share analytics with app developers in your iPhone’s settings, Apple may send us anonymised crash reports and usage statistics. Apple controls that, and you can turn it off in Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements.
Apple services the app uses
- Apple Weather (WeatherKit) for forecasts.
- Apple’s geocoder for place names and city search.
- The App Store handles your purchase, refunds and the optional “Rate Nippy” prompt.
Links to this site, the terms of use and Apple’s weather data sources open in an in-app browser. Those pages are covered by their own policies.
This website
nippyweather.com is a static site. It has no analytics, ads, cookies or third-party trackers, and its fonts are hosted here rather than loaded from a font service. It’s served by Cloudflare, which processes standard request data such as IP addresses to deliver and protect the site.
If you flip the Safe Word switch, your browser remembers that choice in local storage on your device. The star sign tool runs entirely in your browser; the date you enter isn’t sent anywhere.
Age
Nippy is rated 18+ on the App Store because of its suggestive humour. It isn’t directed at children, and we don’t knowingly collect information from anyone, of any age.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in the UK and EU, or the CCPA in California), you have rights to access, correct and delete your personal data. Because we don’t hold any of yours, there’s nothing for us to look up, but you can delete everything Nippy has stored by deleting the app, and we’re happy to answer questions. We don’t sell or share personal information.
Changes
If Nippy starts handling data differently, we’ll update this page and the date at the top before the change ships, and update the App Store privacy details to match.
